The matchup presents a stark contrast in trajectories. Maryland (21-6, 11-5 Big Ten) has won eight of its last 10 and is coming off a dramatic 76-75 road victory at then-Ohio State on Feb. 15. The Terrapins are led by standout guard Oluchi Okananwa, who is averaging 17.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists over her last three games. Her double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds was pivotal in the upset of the Buckeyes. Purdue (11-14, 4-10) arrives mired in a five-game losing skid, most recently an 83-74 home loss to Iowa on Thursday. The Boilermakers have struggled defensively during the slump, allowing an average of 81.2 points per game in those five defeats. Guard Nya Smith has been a bright spot, coming off a 19-point, 5-assist performance against the Hawkeyes. She will need another high-output game to challenge Maryland’s backcourt. The Terrapins won the season’s first meeting, 78-60, in West Lafayette on Jan. 4. In that game, Maryland’s defense forced 18 Purdue turnovers. The Boilermakers will aim to protect the ball better and find consistency beyond Smith, who was held to five points in the prior matchup. For Maryland, maintaining its momentum is critical with the Big Ten Tournament approaching. A win would solidify its position for a double-bye. Purdue, meanwhile, looks to salvage its season by playing spoiler on the road against a ranked conference foe. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST Sunday.
