Preview: La Salle Explorers at Richmond Spiders RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders look to rebound from a rare skid when they host the surging La Salle Explorers in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball matchup Sunday at Robins Center. Richmond (22-6, 13-3 A-10) enters having lost two straight, including a 57-54 overtime defeat at George Washington on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Spiders had won eight consecutive conference games. They are led by guard Ally Sweeney, who is averaging 9.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. Sweeney scored 27 points in a win at VCU on Feb. 1 and dished seven assists in a victory at Davidson on Feb. 14. La Salle (15-11, 9-7) has won three of its last four, most recently a 63-59 home win over Rhode Island on Wednesday. The Explorers are powered by guard Joan Quinn, who is averaging 15.1 points per game. Quinn has scored in double figures in 12 straight contests, including a 21-point performance against Rhode Island. The matchup features a contrast in styles. Richmond boasts the A-10’s top scoring defense, allowing just 55.8 points per game. La Salle averages 66.2 points offensively but allows 66.5 per contest. The Explorers will need to solve Richmond’s defensive pressure, which has held 10 opponents under 50 points this season. In their last outing, La Salle’s Quinn, Ashleigh Connor (15 points) and Aryss Macktoon (13 points) provided balanced scoring. Richmond’s Maggie Doogan led the Spiders with 14 points in the loss to George Washington. This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this regular season. Richmond will look to maintain its hold near the top of the conference standings, while La Salle aims to improve its seeding for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. Following this game, Richmond hosts Rhode Island on Wednesday. La Salle travels to face VCU on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Sunday at the Robins Center.
