JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) â The East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers will look to solidify their position in the Southern Conference standings when they host the struggling Western Carolina Catamounts in a womenâs NCAA Division I basketball game on Saturday. The matchup at ETSU Athletic Center pits two teams on vastly different trajectories. ETSU (13-12 overall) enters with momentum, coming off a thrilling 91-90 double-overtime victory at Chattanooga on Feb. 14. Western Carolina (3-23) seeks to end a prolonged slump, carrying a 10-game losing streak into Johnson City. The Lady Buccaneers have won four of their last five games and previously defeated the Catamounts 62-50 in Cullowhee on Jan. 22. ETSU is led by guard Daniela LĂłpez, who is coming off a career performance. She scored 28 points and grabbed six rebounds in 45 minutes in the win over Chattanooga, showcasing her capability as a primary scorer. Western Carolina, meanwhile, has struggled offensively during its skid, failing to reach 55 points in eight of the ten losses. The Catamounts are coming off a 52-36 road loss to Chattanooga on Thursday. Guard Christina Bowers has been a consistent contributor, averaging 9.7 points over her last seven games. She scored 10 points in the most recent loss and had 14 points and four rebounds in the Jan. 24 meeting with Chattanooga. For ETSU, maintaining defensive intensity will be key after the high-scoring affair against Chattanooga. Alongside LĂłpez, post player Meghan Downing provides a strong interior presence, coming off a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Western Carolinaâs challenge will be to generate consistent offense against an ETSU team allowing an average of just 56.2 points in its last five wins. The Catamounts will also need to contain LĂłpez, who torched them for 18 points in the January meeting. Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon as ETSU aims for a season sweep and Western Carolina searches for a desperately needed conference win.
