JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two ASUN Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum for the stretch run will meet Saturday when the North Florida Ospreys host the Queens (N.C.) Royals. The game at UNF Arena pits teams with nearly identical records. The visiting Royals are 9-16 overall, while the home Ospreys sit at 8-18. Both squads are coming off narrow road losses in their most recent outings, adding urgency to this conference matchup. Queens arrives after a 70-66 victory at Lipscomb on Feb. 14, its most impressive result in weeks, followed by a 73-68 loss at Stetson on Thursday. The Royals are led by guard Magda Freire, who is coming off a strong all-around performance in the win over Lipscomb, posting 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Her playmaking will be key for a Queens offense that has struggled with consistency. North Florida looks to snap a five-game skid, most recently falling 73-68 at Stetson on Thursday. The Ospreys’ offense runs through dynamic guard Alonya Waldon, who erupted for 27 points in that loss. Waldon has been a bright spot, scoring 24 or more points in two of her last four games. Her backcourt battle with Freire will be a focal point. History favors North Florida, which won the first meeting this season, 64-51, in Charlotte on Jan. 10. In that game, the Ospreys’ defense held Queens to 30.2% shooting from the field. Both teams have found wins hard to come by in conference play, making this a critical opportunity to build confidence before the ASUN tournament. The Royals will aim to leverage their recent road success at Lipscomb, while the Ospreys hope home cooking and Waldon’s scoring punch can end their losing streak. Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville.
