HADLEY, Ky. (Interstat) — The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will look to continue their push for a winning season when they visit the struggling Western Kentucky Lady Toppers in a Conference USA women’s basketball matchup Saturday at E.A. Diddle Arena. Middle Tennessee (14-11) enters on a two-game winning streak after decisive victories over Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State last week. The Blue Raiders have won three of their last five, with their two losses in that span coming by a combined eight points. Western Kentucky (6-18) snapped a four-game skid with a 56-41 home win over Jacksonville State on Feb. 14, but has lost eight of its last 10. The Lady Toppers have struggled defensively, allowing 80 or more points in three of their recent defeats. The game is a quick rematch of a Jan. 31 meeting in Murfreesboro, where Middle Tennessee dominated Western Kentucky 81-58. Blue Raiders guard Alayna Contreras torched the Lady Toppers for 25 points, six assists and four rebounds in that contest. Contreras, a dynamic scorer, enters in strong form. She dropped a season-high 28 points in 39 minutes in the win over Kennesaw State and has averaged 20.4 points over her last five games. Her playmaking has also been key, dishing six assists in the previous meeting against Western Kentucky. The Lady Toppers will counter with forward Salma Khedr, who led the team with 16 points and four rebounds in their most recent win. Khedr scored 13 points with seven rebounds in the loss at Middle Tennessee last month and will be central to Western Kentucky’s hopes for an upset on its home floor. A victory would bolster Middle Tennessee’s position in the conference standings as the regular season winds down, while Western Kentucky seeks to build momentum and salvage a difficult season by splitting the series with its rival. Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon.
