AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — A surging Kent State looks to complete a regular-season sweep of rival Akron when the women’s basketball teams meet in a Mid-American Conference matchup Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Golden Flashes (12-13, 8-6 MAC) have won three of their last four, including a 70-67 victory over Northern Illinois on Wednesday. They defeated the Zips (7-19, 5-9) 91-79 in Kent on Jan. 17. Kent State is led by guard Riley Rismiller, who is coming off a 16-point performance against Northern Illinois. Rismiller scored 25 points in a win at Buffalo last month and has been a consistent contributor during the Flashes’ recent improved play. Akron is riding momentum of its own after a thrilling 108-105 double-overtime win over Ohio on Wednesday. Guard Shaena Brew was instrumental in that victory, posting 18 points and 12 assists in 40 minutes. Brew has been a standout for the Zips, averaging 17.4 points over her last seven games and dishing 12 assists in the overtime thriller. While Kent State holds the better overall record, Akron has shown resilience at home, with two of its five conference wins coming at Rhodes Arena in February. The Zips’ offense, which erupted for 108 points last time out, will test a Kent State defense that allowed 101 points in a loss to Ball State earlier this month. The Golden Flashes have found success recently with balanced scoring, as evidenced by three players reaching double figures in the win over Northern Illinois. Containing Brew’s playmaking will be a key defensive focus for Kent State. Saturday’s contest is the second of two scheduled meetings this season between the conference foes. Following this game, Kent State visits Massachusetts on Wednesday, while Akron travels to Ball State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
