STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Stony Brook Seawolves look to solidify their position in the conference standings when they host the struggling UNC Wilmington Seahawks in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. The Seawolves (14-11) enter the contest having won four of their last six games, including a 68-60 victory at Monmouth last Friday. They are coming off a 73-60 road loss to Northeastern on Sunday, despite a standout 26-point performance from junior guard Janay Brantley. Brantley has been a consistent offensive force, averaging over 20 points in her last three victories and will be the primary focus for the Seahawks’ defense. UNC Wilmington (6-18) seeks to halt a difficult stretch, having lost eight of its last nine games. The Seahawks fell 54-52 to Campbell on Sunday in a heartbreaker. A bright spot has been the play of forward Kylah Silver, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in that loss. Silver has shown scoring prowess, including a 27-point outing at William & Mary on Feb. 1, and will be key to any Seahawks upset bid. The matchup presents a stark contrast in momentum. Stony Brook has defended its home court well this season, while UNC Wilmington has found wins hard to come by on the road. The Seawolves’ balanced attack, supplemented by contributors like Diaka Berete and Sandra Frau-Garcia, will test a Seahawks team that has been held under 55 points in four of its last seven games. For UNC Wilmington, containing Brantley and finding consistent scoring beyond Silver will be essential. Guards Rori Cox and Angelina Pelayo, who combined for 20 points and 14 rebounds against Campbell, must provide supplemental offense. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on Feb. 20. Following this game, Stony Brook travels to face Towson on Sunday, while UNC Wilmington visits Hofstra.
