HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) â The Drexel Dragons, riding a surge in conference play, visit the Hampton Pirates on Friday night in a Colonial Athletic Association womenâs basketball matchup at the Convocation Center. Drexel (15-8) enters with momentum, having won six of its last seven games. The Dragonsâ lone loss in that stretch was a double-overtime defeat to Monmouth. They are coming off a 68-59 home victory over Elon last Friday. The Dragons are led by dynamic guard Amaris Baker, who is averaging 21.0 points per game over her last seven contests. She scored 27 points in 39 minutes against Elon and poured in 24 points in just 29 minutes in the teamsâ first meeting this season, a 75-42 Drexel rout of Hampton on Feb. 6. Hampton (9-15) seeks to halt a four-game losing streak and gain revenge for that lopsided loss earlier this month. The Pirates are coming off a difficult 69-44 home loss to Towson. Guard Kayla Lezama, who scored 17 points in that contest, is a key scorer for Hampton. She averaged 14.3 points in three games prior to the Towson matchup but was held to just six points in the first game against Drexelâs defense. The Dragons have dominated the recent series and their current form suggests a significant challenge for the home team. Hamptonâs offense has struggled, failing to reach 60 points in five of its last six games. Containing Baker will be paramount for the Pirates, who must find more consistent scoring to compete. For Drexel, the game represents a critical opportunity to solidify its standing in the CAA ahead of the postseason. A road win would maintain its positive trajectory before a quick turnaround at William & Mary on Sunday. Hampton, looking to climb out of the conference basement, needs a defensive resurgence on its home floor to reverse its fortunes. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Friday.
