EASTON, Mass. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum for the stretch run will meet Thursday when the Stonehill Skyhawks host the New Haven Chargers in a Northeast Conference women’s basketball matchup at Merkert Gymnasium. Both squads enter with sub-.500 overall records. Stonehill (9-15) holds a slight edge over New Haven (7-17) in the standings. The Skyhawks are coming off a decisive 52-37 road victory at Wagner on Feb. 14, a win anchored by strong defense. New Haven, meanwhile, fell 78-74 in overtime at Long Island on the same date despite a 21-point effort from Jasmine McKay. The Chargers will rely on guard Teaira Kelley, who has been a consistent all-around contributor. Over her last seven games, Kelley is averaging 9.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. She posted 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the recent overtime loss. Stonehill counters with forward Ella Pelletier, who is coming off a 14-point, six-rebound performance against Wagner. Pelletier has been a key scorer for the Skyhawks, including a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double in a win at Central Connecticut on Jan. 24. History favors New Haven in the head-to-head series. The Chargers won the previous meeting this season, 66-61, at home on Jan. 2. Securing a regular-season sweep would provide a valuable confidence boost for New Haven. For Stonehill, protecting its home court is critical as it aims to climb the conference ladder. The Skyhawks’ defense, which held Wagner to 37 points, will be tested by a New Haven backcourt featuring Kelley and McKay. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Feb. 19. Following this contest, Stonehill will travel to face Le Moyne on Saturday, while New Haven will host Fairleigh Dickinson.
