OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Omaha women’s basketball team seeks a season-defining upset when it visits Summit League powerhouse South Dakota on Thursday night at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. The Mavericks (4-24, 3-10 Summit) enter on a five-game losing streak, including a 73-43 defeat at Saint Thomas (Minn.) last Saturday. Their last victory was a 65-58 road win at Denver on Feb. 11. Omaha’s offense has struggled, failing to reach 45 points in three of its last five contests. South Dakota (20-6, 10-3), meanwhile, is battling for conference positioning after a 70-65 overtime victory over Missouri-Kansas City last Thursday. The Coyotes have won eight of their last nine games, with their only loss in that span coming at North Dakota State. The matchup is a stark contrast in trajectories. South Dakota dominated the first meeting this season, winning 67-39 in Omaha on Jan. 22. In that game, the Coyotes held Omaha to 23.2% shooting from the field. A key player for the Mavericks is guard Regan Juenemann, who is coming off a 13-point performance against Saint Thomas. She scored a season-high 27 points in a narrow loss to Missouri-Kansas City on Jan. 31 and will be crucial for any Omaha offensive resurgence. South Dakota counters with guard Tori Schlagel, who led the team with 17 points in the overtime win over Missouri-Kansas City. The Coyotes boast a balanced attack and one of the league’s top defenses, allowing just 57.2 points per game in conference play. For Omaha, which has two regular-season games remaining after Thursday, the contest represents a final opportunity to notch a signature road win. South Dakota looks to maintain momentum before a quick turnaround against North Dakota State on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
