SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Hawaii women’s basketball team looks to continue its push in the Big West Conference when it visits struggling Cal Poly on Thursday night. The Warriors (14-10) have won five of their last six games, including a 63-54 victory over Cal State Northridge last Saturday. They sit in the upper tier of the conference standings. The Mustangs (3-22), meanwhile, are mired in a 10-game losing streak and seek their first win since Jan. 8. Hawaii dominated the first meeting this season, routing Cal Poly 86-46 in Honolulu on Jan. 15. The Warriors have relied on a balanced attack and stout defense during their recent run. A key player for Hawaii is forward Imani Perez, who is coming off an 18-point, 3-block performance against Cal State Northridge. Over her last eight games, Perez has averaged 11.1 points and has been a consistent defensive presence. She is complemented by guards Saniyah Neverson and Keiara Curtis, who combined for 27 points in the last outing. Cal Poly’s bright spot has been guard Charish Thompson, who has scored in double figures in five of her last six games. Thompson poured in 20 points against UC Davis on Feb. 7 and followed with 18 at Cal State Northridge. She averages a team-high 13.8 points per game in conference play. Vanessa McManus and Arissa Garcia provide additional scoring options, but the Mustangs have struggled to find consistent production elsewhere. The game will be played at Robert Mott Gymnasium on the campus of California Polytechnic State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST. For Hawaii, this contest begins a critical final stretch as they jockey for seeding in the upcoming Big West tournament. For Cal Poly, it represents a chance to play spoiler and build momentum for the future. Hawaii visits UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Cal Poly’s next game is at Long Beach State on Feb. 26.
