CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles will look to build on a rare conference victory and complete a season sweep when they visit the struggling Presbyterian Blue Hose in a Big South women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Templeton Center. Winthrop (12-15) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 75-65 home win over Longwood on Saturday. The Eagles will be heavily favored against a Presbyterian team mired in a 3-22 season and riding a five-game skid. The Blue Hose last won on Jan. 21. The Eagles dominated the first meeting this season, routing Presbyterian 74-42 in Rock Hill on Jan. 28. Winthrop’s Amourie Porter, the conference’s leading scorer, tallied 18 points in that victory. Porter is coming off a monumental performance against Longwood, posting 27 points and 12 rebounds. Her recent play has been explosive, including a 26-point effort at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 7, though she has also been held to single digits twice in the last six games. Presbyterian, which has failed to reach 65 points in any game during its current losing streak, will need a significant offensive spark. Freshman Yolanda Floyd provided a bright spot in the Blue Hose’s most recent loss, scoring 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench against Gardner-Webb. Her role has fluctuated, but she is coming off her most productive outing in conference play. Winthrop’s consistency has been an issue, with its win over Longwood standing as its only victory since late January. The Eagles have shown they can score, but have also conceded 70 or more points in four of their last seven games. Presbyterian’s offense, averaging just over 50 points per game during its losing streak, may struggle to exploit those defensive lapses. For the Blue Hose, the focus will be on containing Porter and finding enough scoring to keep pace. Winthrop aims to string together consecutive wins for the first time since early January and solidify its positioning before the conference tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
