Preview: Utah Valley at California Baptist Women’s Basketball RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch with significant standings implications is set for Wednesday night when the California Baptist Lancers host the Utah Valley Wolverines. The Lancers (17-9, 8-3 WAC), riding a three-game home winning streak, look to solidify their position near the top of the conference. They defeated the Wolverines 85-75 in Orem just over three weeks ago on Jan. 24 and have won the last two meetings, including an overtime victory in December. California Baptist is coming off an 82-70 home win over Utah Tech on Saturday, powered by a balanced attack. Filipa Barros, a key player to watch, nearly recorded a triple-double in that contest with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The guard has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in four of her last five games, including a 32-point outburst on Jan. 31. Utah Valley (10-12, 4-7) aims to play spoiler and build momentum after a narrow 58-55 home win against Utah Tech last Thursday. The Wolverines have struggled on the road this season, but guard Amanda Barcello presents a major scoring threat. She torched the Lancers for 31 points in the January loss and is averaging 15.5 points over her last four games. The matchup hinges on backcourt execution. Containing Barcello will be a priority for a California Baptist defense that allows 68.2 points per game. Conversely, Utah Valley must find an answer for Barros’s all-around play and the Lancers’ interior presence, which helped them outrebound the Wolverines 42-30 in the first meeting. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at the CBU Events Center. The game continues a critical late-season stretch for both teams as the WAC tournament approaches. California Baptist visits Texas-Arlington next on Feb. 26, while Utah Valley hosts Texas-Arlington on Feb. 21.
