SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt prolonged slides will meet Wednesday when the Utah State Aggies visit the San Jose State Spartans in a Mountain West women’s basketball matchup. The game at the Event Center pits struggling programs. Utah State (6-18) arrives having lost nine consecutive games. San Jose State (3-23) has dropped six of its last seven, with its lone win in that span a 60-57 victory over Nevada on Jan. 21. In their first meeting this season on Dec. 31, the Aggies defeated the Spartans 74-61 in Logan, Utah. A key player for Utah State is guard Jamisyn Heaton, who is coming off a 10-point, six-rebound performance in a 73-59 loss to Fresno State on Sunday. Heaton scored 20 points in a Feb. 7 loss to UNLV and will be central to the Aggies’ offensive efforts. San Jose State will counter with guard Maya Anderson, its most consistent scorer. Anderson has reached double figures in seven straight games, including a 16-point, six-rebound, four-assist outing in a 77-61 loss at Air Force on Saturday. Her season-high 16 points have come in three of the last four contests. Both teams have faced significant defensive challenges. During its nine-game skid, Utah State has allowed an average of 73.2 points per game. San Jose State’s defense has surrendered 79.3 points per game during its 1-6 stretch. The matchup represents one of the final opportunities for either squad to build momentum before the Mountain West tournament next month. Following this game, Utah State visits Grand Canyon on Saturday. San Jose State hosts Boise State on Saturday.
