Preview: Gardner-Webb at Longwood Women’s Basketball FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Gardner-Webb squad will look to avenge a recent loss and disrupt Longwood’s strong conference standing when the Big South women’s basketball rivals meet Wednesday at Willet Hall. The Lancers (18-7), who sit near the top of the league, defeated the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs 76-70 just three weeks ago on Jan. 28. Longwood enters having dropped its last outing, 75-65 at Winthrop, which snapped a three-game winning streak. Gardner-Webb (10-16) arrives with momentum, riding a season-best four-game win streak following a 62-50 victory at Presbyterian on Saturday. The streak marks a dramatic turnaround for a team that had lost six of its previous seven contests. The matchup features two of the conference’s key performers. Gardner-Webb is powered by guard Anaya Harris, who scored 22 points in the win over Presbyterian and poured in 17 points against Longwood in the first meeting. Over her last four games, she is averaging 13.8 points. Longwood counters with forward Otaifo Esenabhalu, who posted a 14-point performance in the Jan. 28 win over Gardner-Webb. She is coming off a near double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Winthrop. The Lancers have been strong at home this season and will rely on that advantage to hold off a Gardner-Webb team playing its best basketball of the campaign. A win would solidify Longwood’s position in the conference race, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs aim to continue their February resurgence and climb the standings. Tip-off is set for Wednesday night in Farmville.
