PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — The Providence Friars will look to continue their push toward a winning season when they host the struggling DePaul Blue Demons in a Big East women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Dunkin’ Center. Providence (13-14, 7-9 Big East) enters on a three-game winning streak, most recently a 59-54 road victory at Georgetown on Saturday. The Friars have found momentum behind forward Teneisia Brown, who is averaging 13.4 points over her last seven games. She scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over the Hoyas. DePaul (6-21, 3-13) aims to halt a difficult season that has seen just two wins since the calendar turned to January. The Blue Demons are coming off a 96-74 loss at Seton Hall, where guard Natiah Nelson scored 21 points. Nelson has been a bright spot, averaging 12.3 points over her last four contests, including a 30-minute, 21-point performance against the Pirates. The Friars won the season’s first meeting, 69-59, in Chicago on Jan. 4. Providence used a balanced attack in that victory, holding DePaul to 32.8% shooting from the field. For Providence, a win would move them to .500 overall and strengthen their positioning for the upcoming conference tournament. The Friars’ recent success has been built on defense, holding opponents under 66 points in each game during their current streak. DePaul, meanwhile, seeks to build on its last victory—a 72-68 win over St. John’s on Feb. 10—and salvage the final weeks of its season. Ball security and defensive consistency will be key; the Blue Demons have allowed 86 points or more in three of their last five losses. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Following this game, Providence faces a tough test at Connecticut on Sunday, while DePaul hosts Xavier on Feb. 22.
