CONWAY, S.C. (Interstat) — Two Sun Belt women’s basketball teams seeking momentum for the conference tournament will meet Wednesday when Coastal Carolina hosts Appalachian State at the HTC Center. The Chanticleers (12-15) and Mountaineers (11-14) enter with nearly identical records and sit in the middle of the league standings. Coastal Carolina won the season’s first meeting 69-53 in Boone on Jan. 7, leading by 16 at halftime and holding Appalachian State to 30.8% shooting. Appalachian State arrives after snapping a four-game skid with a 73-67 overtime victory over Georgia State on Saturday. The Mountaineers were led by a strong performance from forward Elena Pericic, who scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Pericic has been a key contributor, averaging 9.8 points over her last five games, including a 34-minute, 18-point effort in the recent win. Coastal Carolina looks to rebound from a 56-67 road loss at Georgia Southern on Saturday. Forward Tracey Hueston, a player to watch for the Chanticleers, posted 11 points and seven rebounds in that contest. She has shown scoring versatility, including a 24-point, six-rebound outing in a win at Southern Miss on Jan. 24. The matchup will feature a contrast in recent trends. While Appalachian State’s win over Georgia State provided a boost, the Mountaineers have struggled on the road, losing their last four away games. Coastal Carolina has found more success at home, winning three of its last four at HTC Center, including an 85-53 rout of Texas State on Jan. 28. Both teams will rely on interior play. Appalachian State’s Addie Biel recorded a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in the Georgia State win, while Coastal Carolina’s Kristin Williams averages 12 points and six rebounds per game. With the Sun Belt Tournament approaching, Wednesday’s game carries weight for seeding.
