DENTON, Texas (Interstat) — A key American Athletic Conference women’s basketball rematch is set for Tuesday night when North Texas hosts UAB at the North Texas Coliseum. The Mean Green (13-10) will look to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Blazers (10-14) 72-59 in Birmingham on Jan. 20. That victory is part of a 3-2 stretch over their last five games for North Texas, which is coming off a narrow 70-68 road loss to Rice on Feb. 10. UAB, meanwhile, enters with momentum from a 58-56 home win over Memphis on that same date, snapping a two-game skid. The Blazers’ season has been inconsistent, but they have shown the ability to score in bursts, as seen in an 83-65 road win at Wichita State on Jan. 31. The matchup features two of the conference’s top guards. UAB will rely on Cali Smallwood, who is averaging 18.2 points per game over her last five contests. She scored 21 points in the first meeting against North Texas and is coming off a 22-point performance in the win over Memphis. North Texas counters with Aysia Proctor, who led the team with 19 points in the loss to Rice. Proctor scored 13 points in the January win over UAB. Her backcourt play will be crucial against UAB’s pressure. For North Texas, maintaining its defensive intensity from the first matchup, where it held UAB to 59 points, will be a priority. The Mean Green have held opponents under 70 points in eight of their 13 wins. UAB will need more scoring support behind Smallwood, as players like Monae Duffy and Molly Moffitt, who combined for 22 points against Memphis, must contribute consistently on the road.
