Preview: Virginia Tech Visits California in ACC Clash BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams riding winning streaks will meet Sunday when the Virginia Tech Hokies visit the California Golden Bears in an Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball matchup at Haas Pavilion. Virginia Tech (19-7, 11-4 ACC) arrives on the West Coast after a statement 79-67 road victory at then-Stanford on Thursday. The Hokies have won three of their last four, with the lone loss in that span coming to conference leader North Carolina State. California (16-10, 9-6) has found its rhythm, winning five of its last six games. The Golden Bears are coming off a 64-58 home win over Virginia on Thursday, part of a strong stretch that includes an overtime victory over Stanford on Jan. 25. The spotlight will be on a duel between two of the conference’s top performers. Virginia Tech is led by guard Carys Baker, who is averaging 17.4 points per game in conference play. She erupted for 24 points in 38 minutes in the win at Stanford, her third 20-point performance in the last seven games. California counters with forward Sakima Walker, who has been a consistent force. She scored 20 points in the win over Virginia and is averaging 15.2 points over her last six contests. Her versatility was on display in a Feb. 1 game against Louisville, where she posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Virginia Tech’s offense runs through Baker and guard Mackenzie Nelson, who dished out seven assists against Stanford. The Hokies will test a California defense that has held its last three opponents under 60 points. For the Golden Bears, maintaining momentum at home is critical for their postseason resume. They have won four straight at Haas Pavilion, with the victory over Stanford serving as a signature moment. Guard Lulu Twidale, who had 17 points against Virginia, provides a secondary scoring threat alongside Walker. This game is part of the ACC’s expansive scheduling model. For Virginia Tech, it is the front end of a challenging two-game road trip against Pac-12 legacy programs. California continues a key homestand before heading to Florida next week. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. EST Sunday. The Hokies lead the all-time series 3-1, but the teams have not met since 2015.
