OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A surging Villanova Wildcats squad will look to continue its climb in the Big East standings when it visits the Creighton Bluejays at CenturyLink Center on Sunday. The Wildcats (20-5, 10-3 Big East) enter on a five-game winning streak, most recently routing Xavier 78-38 on Wednesday. Their success is fueled by the stellar play of junior guard Jasmine Bascoe, who has averaged 22.7 points and 5.3 assists over her last seven contests. She dropped 27 points in a win at Butler on Feb. 4 and 27 more against DePaul on Jan. 31. Villanova previously handled Creighton 74-64 at home on Jan. 1, part of a dominant conference run where their only loss since came at St. John’s. Conversely, the Bluejays (12-13, 6-7) have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over their past six games. They are coming off a 94-44 road loss to top-ranked Connecticut on Wednesday. Freshman guard Elizabeth Gentry led Creighton with 12 points in that defeat, but her playing time has fluctuated recently. Creighton will need a stronger defensive effort to contain Villanova’s efficient offense. The Bluejays have shown resilience at home, however, including an overtime victory over Marquette on Feb. 8. The matchup pits Villanova’s conference title aspirations against Creighton’s need for a signature win to bolster its postseason resume. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST Sunday in Omaha.
