CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Wofford women’s basketball team looks to continue its climb in the Southern Conference standings when it visits struggling Western Carolina on Saturday. The Terriers (13-11) have won four of their last five games, including a 51-38 road victory at UNC Greensboro on Thursday. They currently sit in the top half of the conference. The Catamounts (3-21) seek to end a 10-game losing streak, their most recent a 60-51 home loss to Furman on the same night. Wofford won the first meeting this season, 71-65 at home on Jan. 15. The Terriers have relied on a balanced attack and stout defense during their recent run, holding opponents to an average of 56.2 points over the last five contests. Guard Maddie Heiss is a key catalyst for Wofford. She scored a team-high 16 points in Thursday’s win at UNCG and has averaged 10.9 points per game over her last seven outings. Her backcourt running mate, Gabby Mundy, added 12 points and six assists in that victory. Western Carolina’s bright spot has been the consistent play of guard Ally Hollifield. She leads the team and is coming off a 15-point, 4-assist performance against Furman. Over her last seven games, Hollifield has averaged 10.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists. The Catamounts have struggled offensively, failing to reach 55 points in eight of their 10 conference losses. They will need to find scoring beyond Hollifield to keep pace with a Wofford team that has shown offensive versatility. Saturday’s matchup at the Ramsey Center tips off a critical final stretch for both teams as the regular season winds down. Wofford aims to solidify its seeding for the conference tournament, while Western Carolina searches for its first SoCon win since early January. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
