CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — The Southern Utah Thunderbirds will look to complete a regular-season sweep and solidify their standing when they host the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at Centrum Arena. The Thunderbirds (16-8) enter the contest riding momentum from an 85-70 road victory over California Baptist on Thursday, powered by a career-high 31 points from standout forward Brooklyn Fely. Southern Utah has won four of its last five games. The Mavericks (10-14), meanwhile, seek to halt a two-game skid following a 63-62 home loss to Abilene Christian on Thursday. Texas-Arlington’s recent schedule has been grueling, with three of its last four games extending to overtime or double-overtime. This matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 29 meeting in Cedar City, which Southern Utah won 77-68. The Thunderbirds also edged the Mavericks 58-55 in Arlington on Jan. 3. Player matchups will be critical. Southern Utah’s Fely has been dominant, averaging a double-double in recent weeks and scoring 12 points in the last meeting with UTA. For the Mavericks, guard Nya Threatt poses the primary threat. She torched the Thunderbirds for 27 points in the January loss and is coming off a 13-point performance against Abilene Christian. The game pits Southern Utah’s efficient offense against a Texas-Arlington team that has shown resilience in close games but struggles with consistency. The Thunderbirds’ superior record and home-court advantage at 4,300-foot elevation make them the favorite, but the Mavericks’ familiarity with the opponent and Threatt’s explosive capability suggest an upset is possible. Southern Utah currently holds the second-place position in the Western Athletic Conference standings, while Texas-Arlington sits in the bottom half.
