RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging UC San Diego looks to rebound from a marathon loss when it visits a UC Riverside team riding a rare high in a Big West women’s basketball matchup Saturday at the UCR Rec Center. The Tritons (17-7) enter the Valentine’s Day contest after a draining 88-80 triple-overtime defeat at UC Davis on Thursday, which snapped a five-game winning streak. Despite the loss, UC San Diego remains among the conference’s top teams and will lean on standout guard Erin Condron. She logged 53 minutes and scored 22 points in the loss, continuing a stellar stretch where she has averaged over 19 points per game in her last eight contests, including a 32-point outburst at Long Beach State on Feb. 5. The host Highlanders (8-16), however, arrive with momentum after a 69-62 road victory at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday. That win was fueled by a dynamic performance from guard Hannah Wickstrom, who poured in 27 points and dished five assists. Wickstrom has been a prolific scorer all season, averaging over 27 points per game in her last eight outings, highlighted by a 35-point effort against Cal State Fullerton. The Jan. 10 meeting between these teams was controlled by UC San Diego in a 70-54 home victory. Containing Wickstrom, who was held to 15 points in that game, will be a primary focus for the Tritons’ defense. For UC San Diego, the game is a chance to regain footing in the conference race and avoid a letdown against a lower-ranked opponent. For UC Riverside, it represents an opportunity to build a winning streak and play spoiler behind its high-scoring guard. The backcourt duel between Condron and Wickstrom is expected to be the central storyline. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST. Following this game, UC Riverside travels to Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday, while UC San Diego hosts UC Irvine on Feb. 21.
