ERIE, Pa. (Interstat) — The Mercyhurst Lakers will look to complete a regular-season sweep and halt a brief skid when they host the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash in a Northeast Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The Lakers (8-15) defeated the Red Flash (2-21) decisively, 79-59, just nine days prior on Feb. 5 in Loretto. Mercyhurst guard Jenna Van Schaik dominated that contest, scoring 23 points and dishing six assists. She enters Saturday’s game as the conference’s hottest player, averaging 18.4 points, 4.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds over her last seven games, including a 20-point, six-rebound, six-assist effort in a loss to Fairleigh Dickinson last Saturday. Saint Francis, mired in a five-game losing streak, seeks its first win since Jan. 17. The Red Flash are coming off a 50-62 home loss to Le Moyne where they shot just 30.2% from the field. Forward Makyiah Ward, who posted nine points and six rebounds in that game, will be a key factor. Ward has been a consistent presence, logging at least 20 minutes in five of the last seven contests. While Mercyhurst holds a significant edge in the standings, consistency has been elusive. The Lakers followed their 20-point win over Saint Francis with an 84-64 road loss to Fairleigh Dickinson. Protecting home court will be a priority, as the Lakers are 5-4 at the Athletic Center this season. Saint Francis remains in search of its first true road victory, currently 0-11 away from home. The game tips off at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 14. Following this contest, Mercyhurst travels to face Wagner on Feb. 19, while Saint Francis visits Long Island on the same date.
