Preview: New Haven Looks to Avenge Loss Against Long Island in NEC Womenās Basketball Showdown NEW YORK (Interstat) ā The Long Island Sharks will look to complete a regular-season sweep when they host the New Haven Chargers in a Northeast Conference womenās basketball matchup Saturday at the Wellness, Recreation & Athletic Center. The Sharks (15-8, 8-2 NEC) enter the Valentineās Day contest firmly in the conference title chase, having won five of their last six games. Their most recent victory was a 69-57 road win at Stonehill on Feb. 7, powered by a dominant 21-point, 17-rebound performance from Kadidia Toure. Long Island defeated New Haven decisively just nine days prior, 65-46, on Feb. 5. New Haven (7-16, 4-6) arrives seeking to snap a two-game skid and find consistency after a series of narrow defeats. The Chargers fell 60-57 at Chicago State on Feb. 7 despite a strong showing from forward Aniya McDonald-Perry, who posted 19 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. McDonald-Perry remains the focal point for the Chargers. Over her last seven games, she is averaging 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, including a 25-point outing in an overtime loss to Mercyhurst on Jan. 29. Containing her will be a primary objective for a Long Island defense that held her to six points in the teamsā first meeting. For the Sharks, Toure has been a force, averaging a double-double in recent play. Her 12-point, 10-redouble-double in the earlier win over New Haven highlighted her inside presence. Guard Janessa Williams, who scored 18 points against Stonehill, provides a complementary perimeter threat. The game pits Long Islandās balanced attack and stout defense against a New Haven team reliant on McDonald-Perryās all-around play. The Chargers have shown resilience in close games, with four of their conference losses decided by six points or fewer, but they must improve upon their 46-point offensive output from the Feb. 5 loss to challenge the Sharks on their home court. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Following this game, Long Island will host Saint Francis (PA) on Feb. 19, while New Haven travels to face Stonehill the same day.
