RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Eastern Kentucky squad looks to rebound from a rare conference loss when it hosts a North Alabama team seeking revenge in an ASUN women’s basketball matchup Saturday at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Colonels (21-5), among the conference leaders, had a seven-game win streak snapped in a 60-48 home loss to Central Arkansas on Thursday. They will aim to rediscover their form against the Lions (13-11), who they edged 80-78 just over a month ago in Florence, Alabama. Eastern Kentucky’s balance has been key to its successful season. In the first meeting, five Lady Colonels scored in double figures, led by guard Althea Kara Angeles. Angeles, a player to watch, is averaging 11.1 points and 3.9 assists per game and is coming off a 17-point, 3-assist performance in a win at Queens on Jan. 30. North Alabama arrives with momentum after a 65-60 road victory at West Georgia on Wednesday. Guard Katie Criswell fueled that win with a season-high 22 points. Criswell, the Lions’ primary scoring threat, has been a consistent minutes leader, playing 37 or more in seven of the last eight contests. The Lions have shown resilience, winning four of their last six games, but face a tough challenge on the road against a Lady Colonels team that is 11-1 at home this season. Eastern Kentucky’s defense, which allows just 58.2 points per game, will focus on containing Criswell and forward India Howard, who added 10 points off the bench in the recent win. For Eastern Kentucky, recovering from an off-shooting afternoon (29.2% from the field) against Central Arkansas is the immediate task. Alongside Angeles, production from Joseana Vaz, who scored 16 points in the loss, will be crucial. The rematch carries implications for the ASUN tournament seeding. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Following this game, Eastern Kentucky begins a two-game road trip at Florida Gulf Coast, while North Alabama travels to face Bellarmine.
