ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Longwood women’s basketball team looks to continue its push atop the Big South Conference when it visits Winthrop on Saturday. The Lancers (18-6) enter Winthrop Coliseum riding a four-game winning streak, including a 75-73 overtime victory at High Point on Wednesday. They currently sit second in the conference standings. The Eagles (11-15) have lost five of their last six, most recently a 67-58 home defeat to South Carolina Upstate. Longwood’s offense, averaging 76.3 points per game during its streak, will be fueled by guard Frances Ulysse. She is coming off a 16-point performance at High Point and has scored in double figures in six of her last seven contests, including a 21-point outing against Radford on Feb. 4. Winthrop will counter with guard Madison Ruff, who scored a team-high 17 points in the loss to Upstate. She has been a bright spot, averaging 12.4 points over her last five games. The Lancers won the season’s first meeting decisively, 100-79, at home on Jan. 14. In that game, Longwood shot 54% from the field and forced 18 Winthrop turnovers. A key matchup will be on the boards. Longwood has outrebounded its last three opponents, while Winthrop was outrebounded by 14 in its last outing. The Eagles will need to control the glass and slow the Lancers’ transition game to reverse their recent fortunes. For Winthrop, Saturday represents a critical opportunity to halt its slide and play spoiler against a conference frontrunner. For Longwood, it is a chance to solidify its standing and build momentum for the final stretch before the conference tournament. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST on February 14.
