JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will meet Saturday when the Jackson State Lady Tigers host the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers. The matchup at Lee Williams Athletic Center features teams with identical 7-16 overall records. Both squads are coming off losses this past Thursday. Florida A&M fell 62-50 at Alcorn State, while Jackson State dropped a 58-50 decision to Bethune-Cookman at home. The Lady Rattlers will look to complete a season sweep, having won the first meeting 68-63 in Tallahassee on Jan. 22. In that game, Jackson State’s second-half rally fell short against a Florida A&M team that has shown flashes, including convincing home wins over Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M earlier this month. A key player for Florida A&M is guard Cornelia Ellington, who has logged heavy minutes recently. She posted 11 points and five assists in the loss to Alcorn State and scored 14 in the win over Texas Southern. Her playmaking will be central to the Lady Rattlers’ attack. Jackson State will counter with forward Jada Patton, who has provided a scoring spark off the bench. Patton tallied 13 points in just 22 minutes against Bethune-Cookman and had 14 points at Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 7. Her efficiency will be needed for a Lady Tigers team that has struggled offensively, scoring 67 points or fewer in nine of its last ten games. Both teams have found consistency elusive this season. The Lady Rattlers have followed a two-game winning streak with two consecutive losses. The Lady Tigers have not won back-to-back games since early January. Saturday’s contest represents a critical opportunity for either squad to build confidence and improve its seeding ahead of the SWAC tournament next month. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.
