CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — A key Southern Conference women’s basketball matchup is set for Saturday at McKenzie Arena as the first-place Chattanooga Lady Mocs host the East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers. Chattanooga (16-6, 7-2 SoCon) enters with a one-game lead in the conference standings and will look to complete a regular-season sweep of its in-state rival. The Lady Mocs won the first meeting 53-41 in Johnson City on Jan. 17, holding ETSU to 27.3% shooting from the field. The Lady Mocs are led by dynamic guard Caia Elisaldez, who is averaging 17.1 points and 6.3 assists in conference play. She scored 13 points with six rebounds in the January win over ETSU and is coming off a 24-point performance in a narrow road loss to Wofford last Saturday. East Tennessee State (12-12, 5-4) has lost two of its last three but remains in the upper half of the league. The Lady Buccaneers are seeking to snap a two-game skid after a 45-40 home loss to Mercer on Tuesday where they shot just 28.1%. Guard Carmen Richardson, ETSU’s primary offensive threat, was held to two points on 1-of-10 shooting in the first matchup against Chattanooga. She has been more productive lately, averaging 10.3 points over her last six games, and will be crucial to her team’s chances for an upset on the road. Chattanooga has been dominant at home this season, posting a 9-1 record at McKenzie Arena. The Lady Mocs’ defense, which allows just 54.2 points per game in SoCon play, will aim to stifle ETSU’s offense again. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 14. The game continues a pivotal stretch for both teams as they jockey for seeding heading into the Southern Conference tournament next month.
