SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — The Utah Utes look to solidify their postseason positioning when they host the struggling Cincinnati Bearcats in a Big 12 women’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah (16-9) enters the Valentine’s Day contest seeking to rebound from a 71-61 road loss at Arizona State on Wednesday. The Utes have been inconsistent in conference play, alternating wins and losses over their last six games. They are led by guard Maty Wilke, who is coming off a 17-point performance against the Sun Devils and has averaged 15.3 points over her last three outings. Forward Lani White, who scored 19 points in the midweek loss, provides a key secondary scoring option. Cincinnati (9-16) arrives with momentum from one of its best performances of the season, a 77-61 home victory over Arizona on Tuesday. That win snapped a three-game skid for the Bearcats, who have found wins scarce in a tough Big 12 schedule. The offense runs through guard Mya Perry, who scored 17 points with three assists and two blocks against the Wildcats. Perry has been on a scoring tear, averaging 20.5 points over her last four games, including a 25-point effort in a close loss at Kansas on Feb. 7. The matchup pits Utah’s pursuit of a winning conference record against a Cincinnati team playing the role of spoiler. The Utes have been strong at home this season, while the Bearcats are just 2-8 in true road games. Utah won the only meeting last season, 77-63, in Cincinnati. For the Utes, a win is crucial to maintain pace in the upper half of the league standings ahead of a quick turnaround at Oklahoma State on Monday. Cincinnati continues a demanding road swing, visiting BYU next Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST Saturday.
