BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — A cross-country nonconference matchup featuring two of the nation’s most dynamic guards will highlight Thursday’s women’s college basketball slate when the Virginia Cavaliers visit the California Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion. The game, organized by the Atlantic Coast Conference, pits Virginia (17-7) against California (15-10) in a late-season test for both teams. The Cavaliers have won three of their last four, including an 81-70 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday. The Golden Bears are also coming off a high-scoring road win, having defeated Pittsburgh 95-80 on the same day. All eyes will be on a showdown between standout guards. Virginia is led by Kymora Johnson, who is averaging 22.4 points over her last seven games. She poured in 29 points with five assists in the win over Notre Dame and scored 26 in a triple-overtime thriller at Wake Forest on Jan. 29. She will be matched by California’s Lulu Twidale, who is capable of explosive performances. Twidale scored 32 points with seven assists at Pittsburgh and had a 36-point, 9-assist outing in a win at Boston College on Jan. 18. Her playmaking was on full display in a triple-overtime loss at Syracuse on Jan. 15, where she dished 12 assists. Virginia’s recent success has been fueled by Johnson’s backcourt partner Paris Clark, who had 15 points and eight rebounds against Notre Dame, and forward Tabitha Amanze, who added 14 points and three blocks. For California, forward Gisella Maul provides a major interior presence, coming off a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double at Pittsburgh, while center Sakima Walker adds 18 points and six rebounds per game. The Cavaliers have shown resilience in close games, with three of their last seven contests going to overtime. The Golden Bears have also been in tight battles, with two overtime games in the same span. Both teams will look to build momentum for the final stretch of the season before postseason play begins. After Thursday, Virginia continues its West Coast trip at Stanford on Sunday. California remains at home to host Virginia Tech on Sunday.
