MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — Two Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Thursday when the Texas State Bobcats visit the South Alabama Jaguars at the Mitchell Center. Both teams enter the matchup on losing streaks. Texas State (10-13) has dropped its last two games, including a narrow 71-69 loss at Northern Illinois on Saturday. South Alabama (9-14) has lost seven consecutive games, most recently a 73-67 defeat at Western Michigan on Feb. 7. The game features a key matchup between standout guards. Texas State’s Kyra Anderson is averaging 17.1 points per game over her last seven contests, including a 23-point, 5-rebound performance against Northern Illinois. She also recorded a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double in a win at Georgia State on Jan. 31. South Alabama will counter with Tamara Ortiz, who is coming off a 14-point, 7-rebound, 3-assist effort against Western Michigan. She leads the Jaguars in assists and is a consistent scoring threat, having posted 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists against Georgia Southern on Jan. 24. Texas State holds a slight edge in the overall season record, but both teams have struggled in conference play. The Bobcats’ recent results have been a mix of tight losses and solid wins, while the Jaguars have been plagued by close defeats, including a three-point overtime loss to Georgia State on Jan. 22. The Bobcats’ offense will look to Anderson and Mia Galbraith, who added 16 points in the last outing. South Alabama will rely on Ortiz and Daniela Gonzalez, who scored a team-high 18 points against Western Michigan. This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season. They are set to play again in San Marcos, Texas, on Feb. 21. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Thursday.
