Preview: Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) β A matchup of teams heading in opposite directions unfolds Thursday when the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks visit the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a womenβs NCAA Division I basketball game at American Bank Center. The Ladyjacks (16-8) enter on a high note after a dramatic 58-57 home victory over Lamar last Saturday, secured by a last-second basket. They have won five of their last seven contests. The Islanders (4-18), meanwhile, are mired in a three-game skid, including a 69-42 road loss to Nicholls State in their most recent outing. Stephen F. Austin, which holds a commanding 84-62 win over Corpus Christi from Dec. 17, will lean on guard Kaylinn Kemp. The standout has been a consistent force, averaging 13.6 points and 5.1 assists over her last eight games. She scored 17 points in the narrow win over Lamar and posted a 21-point, 9-assist performance in a win over Northwestern State last month. For the Islanders to challenge, they will need a strong performance from forward Torie Sevier. She is coming off one of her best games of the season, logging 11 points, four rebounds and four blocks in the loss to Nicholls State. Sevier also erupted for 20 points in a Jan. 24 contest against Incarnate Word, demonstrating her scoring potential. The Islanders have struggled offensively, failing to reach 50 points in three of their last five games. Defensively, they will be tasked with slowing a Stephen F. Austin offense that has scored 83 or more points in four of its last ten games. This contest opens a two-game South Texas road swing for the Ladyjacks, who visit Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. The Islanders continue a homestand Saturday against Lamar. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday at American Bank Center.
