MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Two Horizon League teams looking to build momentum will meet Thursday when the Northern Kentucky Norse visit the Milwaukee Panthers in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball matchup at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. Northern Kentucky (11-14) enters on the heels of a dramatic 77-76 home victory over Oakland on Feb. 3, while Milwaukee (8-18) is coming off a tough 71-64 overtime road loss to Robert Morris on Feb. 7. The Norse won the first meeting this season, 63-55 at home on Jan. 14. In that game, Northern Kentucky’s Mya Meredith scored 11 points. Meredith has been a consistent force lately, averaging 12.3 points over her last seven contests, including an 18-point performance in the win over Oakland. Milwaukee will counter with guard Grace Lomen, who is coming off a career-high 30-point effort in the overtime loss to Robert Morris. Lomen’s scoring has been volatile, but she has tallied double figures in five of her last eight games. She was limited to 8 points in 14 minutes in the January loss to the Norse. Both teams have struggled for consistency in league play. Northern Kentucky’s win over Oakland snapped a three-game skid. The Panthers have lost four of their last five, with the lone win a 75-70 victory over Wright State on Jan. 31. The game will feature a contrast in recent performance. The Norse have shown offensive firepower, scoring 77 points or more in three of their last six games. The Panthers have been held under 66 points in four of their last five outings. Defense keyed Northern Kentucky’s win in January, and replicating that effort on the road will be crucial. Containing Lomen’s hot hand will be a primary focus for the Norse. For Milwaukee, finding secondary scoring behind Lomen and improving offensive efficiency are necessary to secure a home-court split of the season series. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
