Preview: Grambling Lady Tigers at Prairie View Lady Panthers HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — Two Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Thursday when the Grambling Lady Tigers visit the Prairie View Lady Panthers at the William Nicks Building. Grambling (7-16) enters with a modest edge in the standings and fresh off a 67-53 home victory over Alabama State on Feb. 7. The Lady Tigers have struggled for consistency, however, alternating wins and losses over their past six games. Prairie View (2-20) is mired in a prolonged slump, having lost 10 consecutive games. Its last win was an 80-73 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 10. The Lady Panthers’ defense has been a persistent issue, allowing an average of 66.5 points per game during the losing streak. The Lady Tigers will lean on guard Zaria Johnson, who is coming off an 18-point, 5-rebound performance in the win over Alabama State. Johnson has been a key scorer for Grambling, including a 17-point outing in a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Jan. 22. For Prairie View, forward CJ Wilson has been a consistent bright spot. She is averaging 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds over her last three contests, including a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double in a loss to Texas Southern on Jan. 31. Her ability to produce on both ends will be critical for the Lady Panthers’ chances. Grambling won the season’s first meeting decisively, 85-60, at home on Jan. 3. In that game, the Lady Tigers forced 22 Prairie View turnovers and dominated the paint. The rematch presents an opportunity for Grambling to build a winning streak and for Prairie View to find a path out of its extended skid. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST Thursday. Grambling visits Texas Southern on Saturday, while Prairie View hosts Southern.
