CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Furman looks to continue its climb in the Southern Conference standings when it visits struggling Western Carolina in a women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at the Ramsey Center. The Paladins (14-10) have won five of their last seven games, including a decisive 69-38 victory over these same Catamounts on Jan. 17. Western Carolina (3-20) seeks to end a 10-game losing streak, a skid that began with that loss in Greenville. Furman is led by standout forward Clare Coyle, who is coming off a dominant 19-point, 11-rebound, four-block performance in a narrow 58-55 loss to East Tennessee State last Saturday. Over her last seven games, Coyle is averaging 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds, showcasing her two-way impact. She posted 12 points in the first meeting with Western Carolina. The Catamounts, who have not won since Dec. 30, will rely on forward Christina Bowers. She nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in Western Carolina’s most recent outing, a 61-51 loss at Mercer. Bowers was held to six points in the January defeat to Furman. Furman’s recent success has been built on defense, holding opponents to an average of 58.4 points during its 5-2 stretch. Western Carolina has struggled offensively all season, averaging just 53.7 points per game and failing to reach 55 points in six of its last seven contests. The Paladins have dominated the recent series, winning the last six meetings. Another win would solidify their position in the upper half of the conference ahead of a quick turnaround at UNC Greensboro on Saturday. Western Carolina, anchored at the bottom of the league, hopes home court can provide a spark before hosting Wofford on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern.
