NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — A surging Florida team riding its first winning streak in over a month will face a reeling Oklahoma squad looking to halt a skid when the Gators visit the Sooners in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Lloyd Noble Center. The game, organized by the Southeastern Conference, pits teams on opposite trajectories. Florida (15-11) has won two straight, including a 75-69 victory over Arkansas on Sunday. Oklahoma (17-6), meanwhile, has dropped two consecutive games for the first time this season, most recently a 102-86 defeat at Vanderbilt on Monday. The Gators will lean heavily on the stellar play of guard Liv McGill, who is coming off a near triple-double. In the win over Arkansas, McGill played 38 minutes, scoring 25 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing eight assists. Over her last seven games, she is averaging 19.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists, serving as the focal point of Florida’s offense. Oklahoma’s hopes will rest on forward Raegan Beers, who has been a consistent force. She scored 19 points in just 24 minutes during the loss to Vanderbilt. In the Sooners’ overtime win over then-South Carolina on Jan. 22, Beers posted 18 points. Her interior presence will be key against a Florida frontcourt that features Me’Arah O’Neal, who had 16 points and six rebounds against Arkansas. The Sooners boast a superior overall record and a potent offense, averaging over 80 points per game during conference play. However, their defense has faltered lately, allowing an average of 90 points in the two recent losses. Florida’s defense, which held its last two opponents under 70 points, will test whether Oklahoma can rediscover its scoring efficiency. This contest marks the final scheduled nonconference game for both programs this season as they prepare for the stretch run toward the NCAA tournament. For Oklahoma, it’s a chance to steady itself before a tough road trip to Alabama. For Florida, it’s an opportunity to secure a resume-boosting road win against a high-major opponent. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Thursday.
