ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) ā A tight Big South Conference rematch is set for Wednesday when the Winthrop Eagles host the South Carolina Upstate Spartans in womenās basketball at Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles (11-14, Big South) narrowly edged the Spartans (7-17) 66-64 in Spartanburg just over a month ago on Jan. 7. That result is indicative of a season where both teams have struggled for consistency but remain capable of close contests. South Carolina Upstate enters with momentum from a 70-63 road victory at Presbyterian on Feb. 4, one of its better performances of the season. The Spartans are led by guard Cassie Gallagher, who poured in 25 points in that win. Over her last seven games, Gallagher has averaged 17.6 points, including a 24-point effort in a 58-38 win over Presbyterian on Jan. 14. Her scoring burst will be vital for an Upstate offense that was held to a season-low 29 points by Radford on Jan. 28. Winthrop looks to snap a three-game skid, most recently a 72-69 road loss at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 7. The Eagles have been led by the strong play of Amourie Porter, who nearly posted a double-double with 26 points and nine rebounds in that defeat. Porter has been a consistent offensive force, scoring in double figures in six of her last seven outings, including an 18-point performance in a 74-42 rout of Presbyterian on Jan. 28. While Winthrop holds the better overall record, conference play has been a challenge for both. The Eagles have lost five of their last seven, while the Spartans have dropped five of their last six, with the lone win being the recent victory at Presbyterian. The matchup hinges on which teamās top performer can get more support. Gallagherās scoring prowess for Upstate will be tested by a Winthrop defense that allowed 88 points to High Point in its last home game. Conversely, Porterās inside-outside game for Winthrop will challenge a Spartan defense that has shown vulnerability, giving up 85 points to Charleston Southern on Jan. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday at Winthrop Coliseum. The game continues a key stretch for both teams as they jockey for position ahead of the Big South Conference tournament.
