BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging James Madison women’s basketball team looks to continue its climb when it visits Appalachian State on Wednesday night at Holmes Center. The Dukes (18-8) have won seven of their last eight games, including a 71-57 victory at Massachusetts on Sunday. They are powered by a dominant stretch from guard Peyton McDaniel, who is averaging 21.4 points over her last eight contests. She is coming off a 29-point, 11-rebound performance against UMass. James Madison’s offense has been potent during this run, scoring 80 or more points in four of those eight games. Support has come from players like Grace McDonough, who had 10 points and eight rebounds last time out, and Bree Robinson, who contributes as a distributor. Appalachian State (10-13) has struggled recently, losing five of its last six. The Mountaineers fell 68-63 at Kent State on Saturday despite 18 points from guard Daisia Mitchell. Mitchell has been a consistent scorer, reaching double figures in seven of her last nine games, including a 17-point effort in a win over South Alabama on Jan. 29. The Mountaineers will need a strong defensive performance to slow the Dukes’ momentum. Home court at the Holmes Center has provided some respite, where they are 7-5 this season compared to a 3-8 road record. This matchup is the first of a regular-season series split, with the teams scheduled to meet again in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on Feb. 21. James Madison will aim to leverage its high-scoring attack, while Appalachian State seeks to disrupt rhythm and find consistency behind Mitchell’s leadership.
