ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — Two Atlantic 10 women’s basketball teams seeking to halt slides will meet Wednesday afternoon when the Saint Louis Billikens host the Fordham Rams at Chaifetz Arena. Both teams enter the 7 p.m. EST tipoff on losing streaks. Fordham (9-15, 3-8 A-10) has dropped seven of its last eight, including a 53-70 loss at La Salle last Saturday. Saint Louis (11-15, 4-7) has lost five straight, most recently a 43-74 defeat at Rhode Island on Sunday. The Billikens won the first meeting this season, 67-57 in overtime at Fordham on Jan. 21. In that game, Saint Louis forward Alyssa Koerkenmeier posted 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Koerkenmeier remains a focal point, averaging a double-double over her last five games, including a 20-point, 13-rebound performance at La Salle on Jan. 14. Fordham will look to sophomore Anastasija Veljovic to provide a spark. After limited minutes through mid-January, her role has expanded. She logged 23 minutes and nearly secured a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss to La Salle. The Rams have struggled offensively during their skid, failing to reach 60 points in six of their last seven games. Saint Louis has faced similar issues, being held under 65 points in four of its five consecutive losses. The matchup features two of the conference’s lower-ranked teams battling to improve seeding for the upcoming Atlantic 10 tournament. Fordham’s defense, which allows an average of 62.9 points per game, will be tested by Koerkenmeier and guard Zya Nugent, who is coming off a 13-point, nine-rebound outing against Rhode Island. Following this game, Saint Louis visits first-place Dayton on Saturday. Fordham returns home to host Duquesne the same day.
