SAN DIEGO (Interstat) ā A pivotal Mountain West womenās basketball rematch with conference title implications is set for Wednesday night when the San Diego State Aztecs host the Colorado State Rams at Viejas Arena. Both teams enter with identical 18-win seasons, though San Diego State (18-4) holds a slight edge in the loss column over Colorado State (18-6). The Aztecs also own a narrow 46-44 road victory over the Rams from Jan. 28, a result that is sure to fuel the visitorsā quest for redemption. The matchup features two of the leagueās top guards. Colorado Stateās Brooke Carlson, coming off a 23-point, 4-assist performance in an 83-54 rout of Wyoming on Saturday, was held to 13 points in the prior meeting with SDSU. Her scoring punch will be critical for the Rams, who have won six of their last eight. San Diego State counters with Naomi Panganiban, who posted 13 points and 4 assists in an 81-52 road win at San Jose State last weekend. Panganiban scored 8 points in the January win over Colorado State and is averaging 14.3 points over her last seven games. The Aztecs have been dominant at home this season and their defense, which limited the Rams to 44 points last month, remains a cornerstone. Colorado Stateās offense, however, has shown high efficiency recently, averaging 73.3 points in its last three wins. With both teams jockeying for postseason positioning, Wednesdayās contest is more than a simple rematch. Itās a potential tiebreaker and a statement opportunity in one of the nationās most competitive mid-major conferences. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at Viejas Arena.
