ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — A surging Navy women’s basketball team looks to continue its dominance in Patriot League play when it hosts a struggling Bucknell squad on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall. The Midshipmen (16-6 overall) enter the contest having won seven consecutive games, most recently an 86-58 rout of American on Saturday. They sit atop the league standings and have been nearly unbeatable at home. Navy is powered by guard Zanai Barnett-Gay, who is coming off a 22-point, 11-rebound, five-assist performance against American. Over her last seven games, she has averaged 17.4 points and 4.7 assists, providing consistent offensive leadership. The visiting Bison (8-14) have shown recent signs of life, winning three of their last five after a prolonged slump. They are coming off a 50-41 road victory at Colgate on Saturday. Forward Desirae Ashton, a key contributor during this stretch, posted seven points and eight rebounds in that win. However, Bucknell faces a steep challenge based on recent history. When these teams met just over a month ago in Lewisburg, Navy delivered a decisive 77-51 victory. The Midshipmen’s defensive pressure and transition offense overwhelmed the Bison in that matchup. Navy’s balanced attack extends beyond Barnett-Gay. In the win over American, Julianna Almeida recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Morgan Demos added 12 points off the bench. For Bucknell to pull an upset, it will need a strong performance from Ashton and more scoring support from Reese Zemitis and Anna Kunzwiler, who were productive in the Colgate win. Containing Navy’s up-tempo offense and improving ball security will be critical. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Following this matchup, Navy will prepare to host Colgate on Saturday, while Bucknell returns home to face Boston University.
