BOSTON (Interstat) — A surging Army women’s basketball team looks to continue its march toward the Patriot League’s top seed when it visits struggling Boston University on Wednesday night at Agganis Arena. The Black Knights (18-5, 10-2 Patriot) enter on a three-game winning streak and sit just a half-game out of first place in the conference. The Terriers (7-16, 4-8), meanwhile, have lost four of their last five and are fighting to stay in the hunt for a league tournament berth. Army, which boasts the conference’s best overall record, has been dominant in league play, winning by an average of 13.5 points in its 10 victories. The Black Knights’ defense has been stifling, holding opponents to 52.2 points per game in Patriot League action. A key catalyst is junior guard Kya Smith, who is coming off a near-triple-double performance in a 62-50 win at Lafayette on Saturday. Smith posted 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in that contest, highlighting her all-around game. Over her last eight games, she is averaging 11.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Boston University will counter with forward Anastasiia Semenova. The sophomore leads the Terriers in scoring during conference play and is coming off a 13-point, six-rebound effort in a 49-40 loss at Loyola Maryland. Her production is critical for a BU offense that averages a league-low 53.8 points in Patriot games. Army won the season’s first meeting, 64-57, at West Point on Jan. 10. In that game, the Black Knights used a 19-9 fourth-quarter run to pull away from the Terriers. For Boston University, the matchup represents a chance to play spoiler and gain momentum for the final stretch. For Army, it is a must-win to keep pace atop the standings. The Black Knights have shown few weaknesses against the league’s lower half, but will need to avoid a letdown on the road against a familiar foe seeking revenge. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
