Preview: Akron Zips at Central Michigan Chippewas MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (Interstat) — The Central Michigan women’s basketball team looks to solidify its position in the Mid-American Conference standings Wednesday when it hosts an Akron squad seeking to build on a rare win. The Chippewas (14-8) enter the 7 p.m. EST matchup at McGuirk Arena having won five of their last seven games. They previously handled the Zips (5-18) with ease, earning a 74-53 victory in Akron on Jan. 21. Central Michigan is led by standout guard Madi Morson, who averages 23.9 points per game. She scored 23 points in the first meeting against Akron and is coming off a 27-point performance in an 88-81 loss to Marshall on Feb. 7. Forward Taylor Anderson provides a versatile threat, recording 15 rebounds and eight assists in that same game. Akron, which has lost three of its last four, is coming off an 82-71 home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. The Zips’ bright spot has been the play of guard Shaena Brew, who is averaging 17.0 points and 6.4 assists over her last five contests. She scored 16 points in the January loss to Central Michigan. The Zips snapped a four-game skid with a 77-74 win over Toledo on Feb. 4, demonstrating sporadic competitiveness. Forwards Ni’Rah Clark and Keiryn McGuff, who combined for 33 points and 15 rebounds against Louisiana-Lafayette, will be tasked with containing Central Michigan’s interior presence. Central Michigan holds a decisive edge in recent form and seeks a season sweep. Akron aims to leverage Brew’s playmaking and replicate its occasional defensive successes to spring an upset on the road. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
