CONWAY, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Troy women’s basketball team, boasting one of the nation’s top records, aims to continue its dominant run in Sun Belt Conference play when it visits a streaky Coastal Carolina squad on Friday afternoon at the HTC Center. The Trojans (17-3 overall) enter as one of the conference’s hottest teams, having won seven of their last eight games. Their most recent victory was a hard-fought 85-82 road win at Marshall on Wednesday, powered by 21 points from Fortuna Ngnawo and 18 points and five assists from guard Ashley Baez. Baez has been a consistent catalyst for Troy, scoring in double figures in seven consecutive games, including a 31-minute, 18-point performance against Marshall. Her playmaking and scoring punch will be central to Troy’s high-octane offense. Coastal Carolina (11-11) has shown flashes, alternating wins and losses recently. The Chanticleers are coming off a commanding 85-53 home victory over Texas State on Wednesday, where forward Tessa Grady erupted for 21 points and three blocks. Grady’s interior presence, coming off a week where she averaged 14.5 points, will be critical against Troy’s formidable attack. The matchup pits Troy’s potent offense against a Coastal Carolina team seeking consistency. The Trojans have scored 80 or more points in nine games this season. The Chanticleers have demonstrated defensive capability, holding opponents under 60 points three times in January, but also have conceded 80 or more in four of their losses. According to National Statistical’s ELO system, Troy is projected with an 80.80 percent probability to win Friday’s contest. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. EST tip-off. Following this contest, Troy will host Appalachian State on Feb. 4. Coastal Carolina begins a three-game road trip at Arkansas State on Feb. 4.
