Preview: Hampton Pirates at UNC Wilmington Seahawks WILMINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt extended slides will meet Friday when the Hampton Pirates visit the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball matchup at Trask Coliseum. Hampton (8-11) enters on a three-game losing streak, most recently falling 79-53 to Elon on Monday. UNC Wilmington (5-14) has lost seven straight, with its last victory coming on Jan. 2. The Seahawks are coming off a 67-61 overtime loss at Campbell on Tuesday. The game features two of the conference’s top individual scorers, who will be central to their teams’ hopes of reversing fortunes. Hampton is led by guard Kayla Lezama, who is averaging 20.1 points per game over her last eight contests. She scored 21 points in the loss to Elon and has recorded four games of 23 or more points during this stretch, including a 29-point effort against College of Charleston on Jan. 11. UNC Wilmington counters with guard Rori Cox, who is coming off a career performance. She poured in 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the overtime loss at Campbell, playing a full 41 minutes. Cox has scored 16 or more points in five of her last seven games. Both teams have struggled defensively. Hampton has allowed 79 and 70 points in its last two games, while UNC Wilmington surrendered 71 points in a lopsided loss to College of Charleston last week and has allowed an average of 70.4 points per game during its seven-game skid. The Pirates won the only meeting between the programs last season, 66-59, in Hampton, Virginia. Following Friday’s game, Hampton will host North Carolina A&T on Sunday. UNC Wilmington travels to face William & Mary on Sunday.
