ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging College of Charleston women’s basketball team looks to continue its dominant run through the Colonial Athletic Association when it visits Elon on Friday night at Schar Center. The Cougars (16-3, 7-0 CAA) enter on an eight-game winning streak and sit atop the conference standings. Their last loss came on Dec. 19. Charleston’s offense has been potent during the streak, averaging 77.6 points per game and winning by an average margin of 18.4 points. Elon (9-10, 3-4) seeks to even its conference record and avenge a lopsided 87-64 loss in Charleston just 12 days ago. The Phoenix have shown resilience lately, winning two of their last three, including a 79-53 road victory at Hampton on Monday. A key matchup will feature two of the league’s top guards. Charleston’s Sophia Tougas is averaging 10.1 points over her last eight games and is coming off a 15-point performance in a win over North Carolina A&T. For Elon, Laila Anderson has been a consistent scoring threat, pouring in 22 points against Hampton and 21 in the previous meeting with Charleston. Anderson’s performance will be critical for the Phoenix to keep pace. In the Jan. 18 matchup, Charleston’s defense forced 18 Elon turnovers and held the Phoenix to 37.7% shooting. Taylor Barbot (18 points) and Taryn Barbot (16 points) led a balanced Cougar attack that saw five players score in double figures. Elon will need a stronger defensive effort at home, where they are 6-4 this season. Charleston, however, has proven formidable on the road with notable non-conference wins at Florida State and William & Mary. Friday’s contest is the first of a two-game road swing for the Cougars, who play at Campbell on Sunday. Elon hosts Towson on Sunday in its next outing. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
