SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) ā Two teams seeking momentum in the Big South Conference will meet Friday when the Charleston Southern Buccaneers visit the South Carolina Upstate Spartans in a womenās NCAA Division I basketball matchup. The game, scheduled for Jan. 30, 2026, at the G.B. Hodge Center, features teams with identical 1-5 records in conference play. Charleston Southern enters at 6-15 overall, while South Carolina Upstate sits at 6-16. The Buccaneers will lean on guard Tyonna Bailey, who has been a consistent offensive force. She is averaging 20.4 points over her last seven games, including a 30-point, 12-rebound performance at Winthrop on Jan. 10 and 25 points in a loss to High Point on Wednesday. The Spartans, coming off a difficult 67-29 home loss to Radford, will look for a spark from guard Kinley Paterson. She has shown versatility, contributing in rebounds, assists and blocks, though her scoring has cooled recently after a 10-point, 5-assist game against Winthrop on Jan. 7. Charleston Southern won the seasonās first meeting, 60-49, at home on Dec. 31. In that game, the Buccaneersā defense held Upstate to 29.7% shooting from the field. Both teams have struggled for consistency in January. The Buccaneers have lost three of their last four, while the Spartans are mired in a six-game losing streak, having failed to score more than 61 points in any of those defeats. According to National Statisticalās ELO system, Charleston Southern holds a slight projection advantage with a 55.3% probability to win. A victory for either side would provide a crucial boost in the conference standings as the regular season enters its final month. Following this game, Charleston Southern hosts UNC Asheville on Feb. 4, while South Carolina Upstate travels to face Presbyterian on the same date.
