GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — The East Carolina Pirates, riding high in American Athletic Conference play, will look to complete a season sweep when they host the struggling Wichita State Shockers in a women’s basketball matchup Tuesday night at Williams Arena. East Carolina (15-6 overall) enters with confidence, having won five of its last six games, including a dominant 87-61 road victory at UAB last Saturday. The Pirates previously handled Wichita State with ease, securing an 83-56 win in Wichita on Jan. 10. The Pirates are led by guard Anzhane’ Hutton, who is coming off a stellar 21-point, seven-rebound performance against UAB. In the first meeting with the Shockers, Hutton contributed 12 points, two assists and two blocks in just 20 minutes of play. Wichita State (4-16) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a surprising 66-59 home victory over Memphis on Jan. 20. That win was fueled by a spectacular 42-point outburst from sophomore guard Abby Cater, who played 36 minutes. Cater’s scoring has been volatile, however; she was held to just five points in the earlier loss to East Carolina. The Shockers will need another extraordinary performance from Cater and improved play across the board to challenge the Pirates on their home court. Since the calendar turned to 2026, Wichita State’s only victory is the Memphis game, and they have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 75.4 points in their seven conference losses. East Carolina, conversely, has found a rhythm in AAC action, boasting a 6-1 record with an average margin of victory of 18.7 points in those wins. Their balanced attack, featuring key contributors like Keanna Rembert and Jayla Hearp alongside Hutton, poses a significant challenge for a Wichita State team searching for consistency. Tipoff is set for Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Greenville. The Pirates will look to solidify their standing near the top of the conference, while the Shockers aim to build on their lone January win and pull off a road upset.
