Preview: Providence Looks to Avenge Earlier Loss at Villanova BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — The Villanova Wildcats look to rebound from a rare conference loss when they host the Providence Friars in a Big East women’s basketball matchup Tuesday night at The Pavilion. The No. 21-ranked Wildcats (15-5, 6-3 Big East) are coming off a 71-58 road loss to Saint John’s on Saturday, which snapped a two-game winning streak. Villanova, which boasts one of the league’s top defenses, will aim to regain its footing against a Providence team it handled decisively just over two weeks ago. On Jan. 11 in Rhode Island, Villanova dominated Providence 85-55. Kennedy Henry led a balanced Wildcats attack in that victory, one of several strong performances this season for the junior guard. Providence (10-11, 3-7) enters on a three-game skid, including a 73-57 loss at Seton Hall last Tuesday. The Friars have struggled offensively during the slump, failing to reach 60 points in four of their last five games. A key for the Friars will be the play of guard Sabou Gueye, who is averaging 17.4 points over her last seven contests. However, Gueye was held to just six points in the first meeting with Villanova. Providence will need a more productive performance from her to challenge the Wildcats on the road. Villanova’s defense, which allows an average of just 61.2 points per game, will test a Providence offense averaging only 62.1 points. The Wildcats have been particularly strong at home, posting an 8-2 record at The Pavilion this season. Following this game, Villanova will host DePaul on Saturday. Providence continues its road trip at Saint John’s on Jan. 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
